A chief technology officer is typically responsible for managing the programming and technical support teams that execute technology strategies. A chief technology officer incorporates emerging technologies, tools, and best practices. The officer acts as a liaison for the company’s technology via regular written and in-person communications with customers, organizations executive, and department heads. Responsibilities include handling system management, its development, and maintenance work. A chief technology officer also manages operating expenses of the technology department to meet budget goals as well as evaluate and implement changes to create a better experience for users. A chief technology officer is responsible for handling and maintaining IT infrastructure, and ensuring that the processes and systems are in support of enhanced reliability, service levels, and security. The officer ensures appropriate backup of all computer systems in case of system failure or disaster, as well as maintain a tested technology business recovery plan in case of business disruption. A chief technology officer has several years of experience in SQL server, exchange, networking, storage and security, web design, load balancing, SQL syntax, ColdFusion, and customer service databases. Experience in developing, architecting, and managing online applications as well as experience managing the network infrastructure of 24/7 high availability systems is an advantage. A chief technology officer must have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent. A master’s degree is a plus.
